Desks, Anyone?

Dad wanted me to take some pictures of all the household desks and post them on here so the family could look through, identify, request, plan for, and hopefully obtain by Christmas time. In case you didn't get the memo, we are currently renovating the downstairs and furnishing it into a living room/family room/media room/multi-purpose room/really sweet room. There are currently three desks downstairs and none of them are necessarily needed at the moment. The following photos are the pictures of the desks(some wanted, some not). I will provide a running commentary hopefully identify and quoting the household value of each desk.

Culprit Number One:

I believe this desk belongs to Ben. Its daily uses over the past 12 years have included doing nothing and being a placeholder for David's tasty ginger candies that he has allowed me to consume freely. It is quite a nice find for someone looking for a fine oak desk. Ben, feel free to take this at will.

Culprit Number Two:

This desk belongs to....Steve? I can't really remember. It looks like a Steve desk to me. At any rate, this has also largely done nothing sitting in the basement for the past few millennia. It is actually quite a nice desk with nice shelving space on the side; good for the collector of strange and curious items(or books, which can sometimes be quite strange and even more curious). Steve, feel free to take this desk(and not the one I use up in my room that belongs to you).

Culprit Number Three:

I'm pretty sure this one belongs to David. And in that case it really doesn't need to be up here for everyone else to see, however Dad specifically told me to put every desk in the house on the blog(except for the ancient 2-ton "deskroom" desk). This one is a little crummier version of Culprit Number Four(see below). Like I said, I think it's David's desk, so David, there is your desk.

Culprit Number Four:

This is currently the computer desk. It is currently unavailable for being taken. Feel free to take Nikki though, since she snuck into the picture on the right. You can have Twilah too. Free. Also, this is Lisa's old desk.

Culprit Number Four:

This desk belongs to Janell. It is quite likely to be the nicest and most expensive of the household desks. Janell, feel free to take it at will. Maybe it can be in Ozzie's day office.

Culprit Number Five:

This one is MY desk. And by mine I mean Steve's. I took it when I raided the basement for a bigger bed to add to my upstairs Kingdom. I guess if Steve really wants it he can have it, but it would be sorely missed. If you want I'll make you a desk out of plywood for Christmas(with a set of Sheet Metal dinnerware).

Culprit Number Five:

This is the ghost desk. It belongs to nobody and wants no one. It require no care nor requests it. It is simply there. Take at will. This desk is open to all people.

Anyway, there's all the desks that are in the house available for the taking. If someone wants someone else's desk they must settle the dispute with a 10 pace duel. I look forward to seeing you all at Christmas. Goodnight.

  2. I have evaluated all culprits and would like to set the record straight.

Culprit 2 is not mine - last I knew it was Janell's. It also should have glass on the side shelves, but I don't see it in the photo.

Culprit 5 (the first) is indeed my desk, but I don't really want it right now. I don't have room for it - so I bequeath it to you, Daniel. Too bad I didn't draw your name for Christmas. I do, however, want my speakers back. I'll trade for a sweet pair I picked up at Goodwill.

Culprit 5 (the second, aka 'Ghost Desk'): I think we need more info on this desk. As far as I know it predates me. I'd really like it, even though it will add to my projects list. It would be great for the kids. However, for two reasons I could be dissuaded -- 1) if Ben stakes a claim I'm afraid mine might not hold up, and 2) if Janell and Andy want it for Hazel or Ozzie, I probably could be convinced to let Andy remove the many layers of paint on this diamond in the rough.

  3. Steve is right...Culprit #Two is Janell's, and I believe the glass for the side shelves is on the north end of the east attic. But somehow, it seems that the 2nd # Four is Janell's desk, so I'm puzzled. The "Ghost" desk came from Uncle Dick and Aunt Dianne, when Ben and Steve were just little tikes in Indiana, though they (Dick and Dianne) don't seem to remember giving it to us, and wanting it back some day. Dad has checked. There was a day when Ben and Steve shared that desk:)

  4. I agree with the above two comments as to the owners of the cuplrits. I only asked
Daniel to take pictures of the desks, I didn't know he was going to make a post using his limited knowledge.

  5. Limited knowledge?! If anyone had said to me, "One day Daniel will write a brief history of the Barnhart family as told through the lens of accumulated desks," I would have called that person crazy (and then asked them to give me a hand sanding some drywall). Even though Daniel miscounted and apparently mixed up a few desks, I'm ready to nominate this post for "Auto-Ethnographic Post of the Year".

My favorite description has to be for the ghost desk (and "ghost desk" actually popped into my head just before I read the description). Steve, I was also thinking this would be a great desk for your kids, and can vouch for the realness of the wood beneath. If Janell and Andy want to claim it, though, you'll have to work that out.

As for other desks, I'm not interested in claiming my former desk. I'm pretty sure I've got everything out of it (right, Dad?), so this is free for anyone who wants it (or Goodwill, if no one wants it).

  6. I admit that both #2 and #4 (the second #4, not the first one) are mine. I think I outgrew #2 and wanted more drawer space, and maybe gave it to Lisa for a while. Actually I just made that up so I don't have two desks, I don't really remember what I did with it.
As far as poor little Ghostie Desk, we should definitely find it a home. I haven't asked Andy, but I'm guessing he's willing to let the Hancock Barnharts have a go at this one. All of Ozzie's office furniture has an espresso finish, so he turned up his nose immediately upon seeing this picture. And Hazel...well let's not be silly, she's just a baby and didn't understand a word I said when I asked her about this desk.

P.S. Dad, you really shouldn't point out other people's mistakes by making one of your own. I believe the word is miscounted...not miss counted. Though Miss Counted sounds like an important person to know.

  7. I was just checking to see if the thousands of dollars spent on college education really made a different. And apparently it did in your case.

  8. I now have conclusive evidence on the origin of the ghost desk. Mom was right that it came from Dick and Dianne, though it was within the Alpena epoch, not Terre Haute. In a letter dated November 1979, Mom wrote to "Mom and Dad" (Barnhart, I presume) to say thanks for giving them the desk set from Dick and Dianne for Ben. Apparently Ben enjoyed having a place to put his stuff. Also, apparently, Ben and I were starting to play together a little better, which meant we were chasing each other around the house laughing. I recall that the desk was a beautiful olive green at the time - not sure who the ghost artist was, but I suspect it was Dad.
